Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have produced the first flight test aircraft, the single – flight model, which uses the ion – wind phenomenon, called the Biffeld – Brown effect. It is reported N + 1.
During the tests, the aircraft, pushed by the ions, flew about 60 meters at a height of 47 inches from the ground. The launch of the aircraft was carried out with the help of the catapult.
The phenomenon of ionic wind is characterized by the formation of an ionized air flow between two spaced electrodes to which is fed a high voltage of several tens of kilovolts.
Some researchers have proposed an advanced design of aircraft that would use the ionic wind phenomenon, but the projects were closed. It is believed that engines using the Biffeld – Brown effect, can not provide excellent traction.
In reality, there were some experimental aircraft, called lifters or monolete. They represent the body of light in the form of a polygon, usually a triangle, which is an electrode in the form of a copper wire and adhesive tape. Such devices can climb vertically, but are totally unmanageable.

The aircraft received the set of lithium-polymer batteries, capable of providing a voltage of 160 to 225 volts.
