1 – These bills won national awards for Buffalo's victory in week 10
The Buffalo offense gave a show during the rout of the Jets during the 10th week.
The team set new season highs in both yards and points, totaling 451 yards for the 41-10 win. Matt Barkley shone on his first start as Bill, completing 15 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Barely a day after being promoted to the lineup, Robert Foster made an impact by winning three passes for 105 yards. Even the left tackle, Dion Dawkins, went to work with his first career touchdown pass.
It was an unexpected offensive explosion that pleasantly surprised fans and analysts. NBC Sports writer Peter King was impressed by the Bills' offensive release, awarding Barkley and offensive co-ordinator Brian Daboll the 10th week of his Morning football in America.
King ranked Barkley among his offensive players of the week.
It's weird to even type those words. "Matt Barkley, quarterback, Buffalo." Barkley was gone. His career in the NFL was Kaput. The only reason he started Sunday was because of injuries to 1 (Josh Allen) and 2 (Derek Anderson), and to the wickedness of 3 (Nathan Peterman). The quarterbacks will have better days than Barkley (15 of 25, 232 yards, two touchdowns, one interception), but many will win a game on the road with a hopeless attack after being in the team for less two weeks.
King also awarded Daboll the "Coach of the Week" honors, praising his inventiveness during the win.
Points scored in the Bills' four-game losing streak: 33. Points scored Sunday: 41. When you're in a crisis, you have to resort to desperate measures, which Daboll did. He designed a pass for left tackle Dion Dawkins, and it worked, allowing a 7-yard touchdown, which in fact interrupted the Jets' run. Daboll's imagination has evolved a lot in this game.
2 – Rookie Levi Wallace plays all goals in his NFL debut
Buffalo cornerback Levi Wallace had a whirlwind of months.
In early November, Alabama's unregistered defenseman found himself on the Bills training squad, where he had been sitting since his cut by Buffalo after his fourth and final preseason game.
Barely 11 days into the month, Wallace had not only been promoted to the Active List, but was preparing to start his first game in the NFL.
"I just wanted to go out there and compete," Wallace said. "Have fun with my teammates, play for them. Do my best for them, honestly.
"The competition" is exactly what Wallace helped Buffalo do in his 10-week win against the Jets. Although the 23-year-old did not light up the game sheet during his NFL debut (a tackle, a pass bypass), he ensured a regular presence of the Bills defense, a person on whom the unit could count on playing if necessary.
Wallace was the only Buffalo defenseman to have participated in all the defensive attacks of the 10th week.
This statistic seems almost surreal, a non-created free agent playing every shot a few days after being promoted to the active player list. However, Wallace has not had a chance to think about that yet, because that's the only thing he can feel after his debut.
"I feel bad," said Wallace. "I have not played since the last preseason game. Just to come back, it was good. I just need to get back in the flow. I had a lot of fun [Sunday] for sure."
3 – Robert Foster and Isaiah McKenzie put speed on the attack
Speed was something that Buffalo was sorely lacking on the offensive side of the ball throughout the first half of the 2018 season. Identifying the explosive as a desperate need, the Buffalo Headquarters office took some steps ahead of its match. week 10 with the Jets, claiming Isaiah McKenzie against any derogation before promoting Robert Foster on the practice team.
The removals immediately paid off.
Additions from McKenzie and Foster allowed Buffalo to set the stage for his win in Week 10, allowing the team to score the highest point of the season with 41 points. McKenzie has played well in the special teams and has amassed four touchdowns, totaling 121 yards. Foster had three passes from Matt Barkley, including two for more than 40 yards.
Head coach Sean McDermott was impressed by what McKenzie and Foster were able to accomplish on Sunday.
"Yes, Brandon (Beane) and his staff have done a good job," McDermott said. "It's something we talked about this week. We felt like we were just running out of speed, so these guys – Isaiah and Robert – did a good job. "
Having a threat as deep as Foster has helped the bills to open other facets of their offense. Sean McCoy has the impression of enjoying Foster's presence and thinks the former Alabama Broadout still has a bright future.
"The ability to stretch the pitch," McCoy said. "It's something that I preached to them. I played with one of the best players with DeSean Jackson.
"When you have this threat, the defense must pay tribute to him. In defense, they say to themselves, "I can give up a five-yard or three-yard win, but you do not want to give up 36 or 48 yards. I told him to make sure he keeps going. It can be one of those deep threats. He is very explosive. "
