Thesis, Simpson's scenario, goods sold at auction

The items sold include some of his most important papers, including his doctoral dissertation, a copy of A brief history of time and the script of one of his appearances on The simpsons, Fox News reports.

Between October 31 and November 8, the Christies auction will be held under the hammer of London auction house Christies, in an online auction called "On The Shoulders Of Giants". Hawking published 12 of the most prominent articles published, including his 1965 doctoral dissertation. At the time, Hawking had previously been diagnosed with motor neuron disease (also known as ALS). The thesis is signed: "This memoir is my original work, S.W. Hawking."

This is one of five known copies of his thesis, the auction house said. His pre-sales estimate is between $ 126,000 and $ 189,000.

In October 2017, the University of Cambridge posted Hawking's thesis online and the increase in traffic generated by interested parties wiped out the website.

"The auctioned lots highlight Dr. Hawking's outstanding scientific achievements, as well as his unique personality and inspirational story," said Thomas Venning, Christie's book and manuscript manager in a statement.

The auction will complete by one of Professor Hawking's wheelchairs, which, according to Venning, allowed him to travel the world as a science communicator, and from where his mind traveled up to the confines of space-time, thus making it literally and figuratively one of the busiest wheelchairs in history. His estimated value before the sale is between $ 12,600 and $ 18,900.

The proceeds from the auction will benefit the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Christie's said.

Although physically disabled, Hawking has succeeded in inspiring people around the world, teaching physics and mathematics, speaking and floating in weightlessness while working in the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity.

He was not modest about what he wanted to do. "My goal is simple," he said once. "It's a complete understanding of the universe, why it is such that it is and why it exists at all."

In addition, the London-based auction house will also publish a copy of A brief history of time, the best-seller of the cosmologist in 1988, wearing Hawking's thumbprint, a leather jacket and a copy of the scenario of the 22nd season of The simpsons, entitled "Elementary School Musical" for which Hawking lent his voice.

After the death of Hawking on March 14 of this year at the age of 76, The simpsons paid tribute to the renowned physicist.

"We hope to be able to offer our father's archives to the nation … because we think this is part of his heritage, but also the history of science in this country," Lucy said. "We also give admirers of his work the chance to gain a memory of our father's extraordinary life in the form of a small selection of evocative and fascinating articles."

In addition to some of Hawking's possessions, other leading scientists, including Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein, will be included in the auction.
