WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has called for reports that world leaders would have laughed during his speech at the United Nations "false news" at a press conference on Wednesday.

"They were not making fun of me, they were laughing with me," Trump told the press on Wednesday.

President's speech Tuesday began with him saying that his administration "has done more than almost any administration in the history of our country".

The comment was followed by laughter from diplomats in the crowd and Trump saying, "I did not expect this reaction, but it's okay."

The president said the laughter was taken out of context and treated unfairly in the media.

"Well, that's a false news," said the president. "These are fake news and this has been covered this way."

He said the leaders "respected what I had done" and that the crowd was "having a good time with me".

"I said that our country is now stronger than ever, that's right," said the president. "And I heard a little rustle and I said it was true and I heard smiles."

When we heard a laugh, Trump said the crowd laughed with him.

"We had fun," said Trump. "They did not make fun of me."

More: Nikki Haley: World leaders laughed at Trump because they like his honesty

Trump's message echoed the comments made by UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who said the laughs were made because world leaders like "as he is honest".

Haley told Fox News that the press was wrong to describe laughter as a lack of respect for the president.

"They liked how honest he is," said Haley on the Fox and Friends show. "It's not diplomatic and they find it funny."

She said the diplomats "fell on their own" to take a picture with Trump and tell him "how great his speech was".

"They love their honesty with them and they have never seen anything like it, so there is respect," she said. "I saw that the media was trying to make this something disrespectful, it's not what it was, they like to be with him."
