Six people died after a man from Bakersfield, California was shot dead Wednesday in a trucking company and ended about 15 minutes later with the suspect's suicide, said a local sheriff .
"Six people lost their lives in a very short time," said Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood. a press conference on Wednesday evening.
He added later, "This is the new normal."
Youngblood said the shooting began around 5:20 pm, when the unidentified suspect and his wife arrived together in a trucking company in an industrial complex east of Bakersfield. During the clash, the suspect shot the man – then turned his gun on his wife, killing her too, Youngblood said.
When a male witness came forward, the suspect began chasing the man while he was shooting at him, Youngblood said. The suspect killed the man outside a gun store, the sheriff said.
A witness who worked in the industrial complex told the Washington Post that he had heard several shots in a few minutes. He said that he was out of his business in time to see the suspect run away.
"It's a big industrial area and we always hear loud noises. I thought, what was it? Has a tire been blown? Then I saw a guy with a gun, shooting, "said the witness, who refused to be identified. "I saw another man shouting, Policía! Policía! There is a crazy man with a gun! "
The suspect escaped to a neighborhood, said Youngblood, and was heading to a specific residence. When he arrived at the residence, the suspect killed two other men, the sheriff said.
He then hijacked a nearby vehicle with a mother and child and headed towards the highway. The mother and the child were able to escape unharmed, Youngblood said.
A deputy shot him on a highway and confronted the suspect with his shot gun, Youngblood said. At that time, the man got out of the vehicle and shot himself in the chest.
"Where we go from here is to try to understand why it started and why there are so many players involved in the connection, because these are obviously not random shots," Youngblood said. .
Youngblood said he would consider this a shootout, saying the series of shootings was "definitely" linked.
The Kern County Sheriff said the motive was not entirely clear, but that much of his department was working to collect the shootings. "Obviously, there is a situation that has completely upset the husband," he said.
Youngblood did not identify the victims nor indicated their age and did not identify the company where the shooting occurred. There are many trucking companies in the industrial complex, some of which could not be reached immediately by the Washington Post.
