Police in Milton, West Virginia, gave shocking news about two bizarre behavioral raccoons who were originally reported drunk on fermented crab apples.
At least one raccoon seems to have had distemper, a very contagious disease, and had to be euthanized.
The Milton Police Service explained what happened in a detailed article posted on Facebook on Thursday.
On November 9, police trapped a raccoon suspected of being enraged, but they concluded that the animal was probably just drunk on the fermented fruit because of "its proximity to the wild apple tree, its actions and its appearance ".
The next day, a second raccoon was reportedly trapped by the police. Believing that this one was also drunk, they published it. The two raccoons were returned to the wild and the Ministry's Facebook page on so-called "drunk" raccoons became extremely viral.
But on Wednesday, when police received a report that a third raccoon fell from a tree, they called on a local wildlife rescue group, Point of View Farm. This group suggested that animals may be suffering from distemper, a serious viral disease that can be transmitted to other animals, including dogs. (It does not infect humans and dogs can be vaccinated against this virus.)
The police were then able to locate the second raccoon he had trapped and found that he was "continually grabbing" himself just 10 feet from where he had released him. This raccoon and the third raccoon that fell from the tree were euthanized.
The police did not locate the first raccoon she had trapped, but the ministry wrote on Facebook that he hoped the animal "was in fact drunk, was eating crabapples, weakened and flourished. in nature as it should be.
