Police began investigating Ravenel in May after a woman reported him for sexual assault. A former nanny named Dawn told PEOPLE that she was this woman and alleged that while her daughter was sleeping nearby, she "took her" to the master bedroom, dropped her pants, clothes.

A source tells PEOPLE that Ravenel's arrest is related to his allegations.

"Although I think he should be in jail for his crimes, the reality, according to statistics, is that he will go unpunished," Dawn PEOPLE said at the time. "I think the only justice I will receive will be to share my story as part of efforts to educate the public and support survivors of aggression."

She said she acted after hearing the story of real estate agent Ashley Perkins, who publicly accused Ravenel of assaulting her mother Debbie Holloway Perkins after their meeting on Tinder in October 2015.

Ashley told PEOPLE that her mother, Debbie Holloway Perkins, had a first date with Ravenel on December 25, 2015.

"He pushes my mother on the nanny's bed, catches her wrist with one hand, and then starts trying to pull off her pants," Ashley told PEOPLE. And she said, "No, no, no, stop. He smashed his fingers into her vagina as well as her anus, she said that he was holding his hands back with one arm and then pulled out his penis and stuffed it into his face.

"My client enjoys a certain degree of notoriety, which unfortunately makes it a vulnerable target for such claims," Ravenel's lawyer Richard P. Terbrusch said in a statement responding to Ashley's allegations. "The person described by this woman is just not the man I know. My client is a loving father, a successful business man and a right member of the community. He is appalled and hurt by these allegations – and is committed to defending his reputation in the appropriate court. "

Ravenel announced his decision to leave Southern charm in August.
