Protesters took to the streets of Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Seville, Valencia and Bilbao to show that the fight against violence against women has become a national cause in Spain.

"We are here for all the murdered women in Madrid and Spain and we take it very personally," said Rosa Orea at the rally in Madrid.

Since 2003, 972 women have been killed by their partners or ex-partners in Spain, including 44 until now in 2018, according to government figures.

"The situation has changed for our generation, but we must continue to fight, because this (violence) occurs more than it appears," said Sofia Serrano, a student from Madrid.

Violence against women has been a key political cause in Spain since 2004, when new laws against crime were passed.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reinstated Sunday "the commitment" of his government to eliminate violence against women and the "culture" of sexism.
