LEXINGTON, KY. (WKYT) – Susan G. Komen Kentucky, a local nonprofit organization working to end breast cancer forever, hosted its 23rd annual Lexington Healing Run 5K race and its one-day walk. kilometer into the city center.
Breast cancer will be diagnosed in one in eight women and one in every 1,000 men in their lifetime. Funds raised from Race for the Cure will support global breast cancer research and help local people.
"It will fund programs and services that we build in partnership with our medical organizations and that we provide to the community," said Lynda Weeks, executive director of the event.
Saturday's event was also about celebrating people who have defeated breast cancer and remembering those who have lost the disease. For Mike Davis, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, this healing race has been like a supportive family for him throughout his life.
"When you bring together so many people who have survived and you're going through it together, it's just a matter of fraternity," Davis says.
In addition to being there to support others who are living the same things, Mike says he also wants to educate people about how men can contract breast cancer.
Sam Dick and Amber Philpott of WKYT were the MCs at this year's event.
According to the organizers, approximately $ 200,000 will be raised by the end of the fundraiser, which ends November 30.
