About 4,000 people attended the 24th annual Breast Cancer March, hosted by the American Cancer Society in Hartford on Sunday morning. NBC Connecticut and Telemundo Connecticut were proud to put the community in touch with this inspiring event as official sponsors.

Although the march was moved last minute from Bushnell Park to the XL center, it did not stop the survivors and their families from uniting with others in the same fight.

"It's inspiring for them to see the numbers of people who are affected by the disease and engaged in the same type of struggle or who have just supported it," said Wendy Matthews, executive director of the American Cancer Society.

The 5-kilometer walk raises funds for breast cancer research and early detection, which is exciting for 39-year-old Cynthia Lopez after finding a lump in a breast exam last year.

"If you feel a little bump, a big bump, any kind of bump, go get checked because you never know," Lopez said.

Shirrie Henry was busy with her mother while she was fighting the disease for years. She said her loss two years ago was devastating. Now, she volunteers in her memory.

"I just want to go out and support those who are survivors, their family members, caregivers," said Henry. "So, just to walk with everyone and show your support."

The two women said that they found comfort in a new and unexpected way.

"It's like we're all together like a big, old family," said Lopez.

"It touches me deeply to be here," Henry said. "I am honored."
