PHOENIX – Interstate 17 is closed in both directions near 7th Street following a shooting between soldiers and a prosecuting suspect Monday night.

The Ministry of Public Security said that soldiers were involved in a lawsuit before arresting the suspect near the exit of the 7th street around 17 hours.

In an evening update, Phoenix police announced that the suspect and his soldiers had exchanged shots. Three soldiers were injured during the shooting. Police said the suspect was declared dead at the scene.

The Mesa Police Association said the incident also involved Mesa officers and that it was a shootout. The Mesa Police Association said that a suspect they described as "extremely violent regardless of innocent civilians" opened fire in the middle of the highway.

It is unclear exactly why the driver of the pursuit vehicle was wanted or what motivated the pursuit.

The Phoenix police handle the criminal investigation, while Mesa and the DPS conduct internal investigations.

It is not known how long the road will be closed.
