SOLON, Ohio – The motto of Solon City is "Service on oneself", and the city intends to show that these words make sense when it hosts a benefit-event to benefit Hurricane Florence Donation Drive.
This event will take place from 18:30 to 20:30. October 10 at Solon Community Center, 35000 Portz Parkway.
In September, the main Category 4 hurricane caused significant damage in the Carolinas, mainly as a result of floods, and killed 42 people. As a result of the hurricane, thousands of people still need shelter, food, water, recovery support and basic services.
The idea of collecting donations was encouraged by an administrative coordinator from Solon's finance department, also a US Navy veteran.
"Frank Corlett, an employee of the Finance Department, has proposed the idea of this fundraising campaign," said Mayor Ed Kraus in a press release. Speaking of the motto "Service first and foremost," continues Kraus, "Our residents, businesses and employees live it every day, which confirms our passion for helping people in need.

Corlett said more than 30 companies and organizations have agreed to participate.
Speaking of his past and the need for the event, Corlett said, "I entered the city in 2017. Just before that, I served seven years in the Navy. have been pretty much service oriented all my life.
"I have a lot of friends who have been affected by hurricanes, I was on the site of Hurricane Katrina and I saw the floods and the houses that were destroyed.
"Millions of people have been affected by Hurricane Florence, and if we can help even 100 people, it's 100 fewer people who have to suffer," he said.
Corlett said the goal of fundraising is to raise $ 5,000. Specifically, the money will go to the American Red Cross and the GlobalGiving charity.
The price of a ticket is $ 25, which includes a chance to win the prize at the door, which has not been decided yet.
Participants will have the opportunity to bid on gift baskets while enjoying the nibbles and music directed by DJ Bill Conklin.
Tickets are available at the reception of Solon Town Hall, located at 34200 Bainbridge Road and, weather permitting, at the Solon Fall Festival, which will be held from 10 am to 4 pm October 6 at the community park of the city. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
Tickets for the 50/50 draw will be available for $ 2 each and for the $ 1 draw each. Only cash will be accepted for raffle tickets. Money and checks made payable to the American Red Cross will be accepted for event tickets.
