Aguilar leads the majors with 10 homers and 32 RBIs with two strikes, but first things first. Freddie Freeman will win the fan vote and rightly so. Does Aguilar win the player's vote as a backup? Given its late onset and lack of pedigree before this season, it seems that the vote will likely go to Brandon Belt or Joey Votto or Anthony Rizzo or Paul Goldschmidt (although Votto, Rizzo and Goldschmidt all started slowly and the player vote made in mid-June or more). It is possible for Aguilar to make a third baseman, although it depends on how the lineup fills up once you make sure each team has a representative and so on.
In terms of war, Aguilar is quite far in the list. at 2.0 coming in on Thursday, ranking seventh among the first NL basemen, but part of that is because it does not have as much playing time. Among the NL players with at least 150 PAs he is second in OPS only at Max Muncy, another big surprise.
The MVP case would be more supportive of "wearing the team" than a war argument. Whereas the Milwaukee attack is only middle of the pack, Aguilar has been huge. His probability of winning is not among the leaders of the league, so it does not seem that he has been very special in high leverage situations. Still, it has become one of the best stories of the season, and a trip to Washington would be a nice reward.
The Red Sox Acquire Steve Pearce: Seeking help against left-handed, The Red Sox picked up Pearce from the Blue Jays on Thursday night. It will be interesting to see where they deploy it. The obvious squad is with Jackie Bradley Jr., with Andrew Benintendi sliding to the center and Pearce or J.D. Martinez playing left. He was also able to play in the pack with Mitch Moreland, although the Red Sox love Moreland's defense early on. It will be interesting to see if they try Pearce at second goal. He has not played in two seasons, but has started 27 games in 2015-16. He also played 70 innings in third base, so he could be a platoon partner for Rafael Devers.
