Timothy Chalamet panicked on work with Steve Carell, Amy Ryan

Timothée Chalamet is like any other fan of Office when it comes to the star of the series, Steve Carell.

The 22-year-old actor plays alongside former actor Michael Scott, 56, in Handsome boy, a heartbreaking story about a father and his drug addict son. The film also arrives at star Amy Ryan, who played Michael Scott's wife, Holly Flax, on Office – a fact that has not escaped Chalamet.

"I had to have several auditions for this and the last time I came with Steve, I immediately felt well integrated, protected," Chalamet told PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival. "But I must say that I had to overcome the fact that I was a big fan and that I would be wary of everything. Like, I'm totally sitting here with Michael and Holly, but I'm not going to get close to that. It was the little thing that I had to overcome.

Carell played Michael Scott for 7 seasons on NBC's beloved sitcom. Dunder Mifflin's long-time manager finally walks away (as Carell leaves the show) to be with Holly.

Carell also connected with the young actor, who won his first Oscar nomination earlier this year for Call me by your name.

"From my point of view, we connected instantly," says Carell. "The first time we met. I mean, look at it. He is so kind, generous, warm, intelligent and funny. I'm not trying to make you feel weird, but we connected instantly. He's a great guy. It was easy for him to feel like we had a parent / son relationship.

Handsome boy will be released on October 12th.
