Eating a big dinner in the evening can lead to high blood pressure and diabetes, the American Heart Association said Monday.

A team from the Columbia University Medical Center in New York analyzed interviews of nearly 13,000 people in a national health study of Latinos and Hispanics who answered lifestyle questions while subject to medical examinations.

The team found that the more they ate after 18 hours, the higher their blood glucose levels. People who said they consumed about a third or more of their calories at night had a 23% higher risk of high blood pressure.

"In our study, we show that if you eat most of your calories before 6 pm, you will be able to have better cardiovascular health," said Nour Makarem of Columbia, who participated in the study. "The timing of eating and eating earlier in the day can be an important strategy for reducing the risk of heart disease."
