UNION COUNTY, N.C. – The Union County Sheriff's Office confirmed that MPs had found the body of the missing one-year-old child, washed away in tumultuous waters Sunday night.
Research activities resumed Monday after teams spent several hours searching for Kaiden Lee-Welch on the ground and in the nearby creek.
Officials said the child and his mother were heading east on the NC-218 towards Wadesboro when the mother bypassed the road barricades.
They said that the mother continued to drive on NC-218 until her vehicle crossed the water flowing down the road. His car left the road, but eventually stopped in the middle of a group of trees at Richardson Creek near New Salem.

The authorities said that the mother was able to free herself and release Kaiden from the vehicle, but that she had lost her grip on the water.
"I was in hydroplaning, I was trying to do everything I could and it got worse when water gets into your car." You start to panic, you start to panic, you think that you sink in. Everything happened too fast, "mother Dazia Lee told Channel 9.
Lee said that they lived in Charlotte, but that they were visiting Union County.
"When the water came in, I tried to calm my son in. He was confused, it was all he was in. He was just confused but I told him that it was going, do not panic, even if I panicked panic, "Lee said.
Lee was rescued soon after. Kaiden's body was found not far from the car on Monday morning.
Sheriff Eddie Cathey was heartbroken when he gave the update Monday afternoon.
"This mom has suffered tragically when she lost a child, that's all you can say," Cathey said.
