Tornado Damages Reported In Greenwood County, Governor Colyer Declares State Of Disaster

EUREKA, Kan. (KSNW) – Stormy weather caused at least one tornado in Greenwood County on Tuesday night.

The National Meteorological Service reports that a tornado fell in Eureka around 19:21. causing structural damage and uprooted trees.

Greenwood County Sheriff Heath Samuels tells KSN that five people were injured as a result of the tornado that struck Eureka on Tuesday night. One of the injured sustained serious injuries.

The Greenwood County Emergency Management Service said that US 54 was closed at the South K99 junction and at Flint Hills Road in Butler County.

According to Westar Energy, the storms have destroyed more than 5,000 people in the Eureka region.

Governor Jeff Colyer declared a proclamation of state emergency disaster at 8:33 pm. and Greenwood County declared a state of local disaster.

The State Emergency Operations Center in Topeka has been activated to coordinate the response of state agencies. Staff from the Kansas Emergency Management Division are in contact with Greenwood County Emergency Management to respond to requests for assistance.

A shelter was opened by the American Red Cross for displaced residents at the Methodist Church on Main Street in Eureka. It is located at 521 N. Main Street.

A spokesman for the Warrant Officer's Department said the agencies represented at the Emergency Operations Center include the Kansas Emergency Management Division, the Kansas National Guard, Kansas Transportation, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Health and Environment. and Department of Child and Family Services.

The National Weather Service also said that there were several reports of a string tornado affecting east of Potwin and north of El Dorado around 6:39 pm.

Earlier Tuesday, the meteorological service reported a hail from an inch to four miles north of Pfeifer in Ellis County, and to Lenexa and a mile northwest of Olathe, hail in inches and a half was also reported to El Dorado.

The National Weather Service also reports power lines along Highway 77 on the north side of Douglass.

In Wichita, many viewers sent pictures of hail from a quarter to a half dollar that fell mostly in the northeastern part of the city.

Gusts of wind also reached 50 to 60 mph at Bentley.
