For more than two decades, Pixar proposed two rare constants: high-quality animated films that appealed to children and adults, and animated shorts that would be shown just before these theatrical films. But now, more than 20 years after the launch of Pixar Geri's game in front of The life of an insect in 1998, the animation studio broke with tradition Toy Story 4, which will not feature a previous Pixar short film.
Slate reports that Pixar breaks his long tradition of broadcasting a short animated film in front of his next feature film, Toy Story 4. This makes it the first Pixar movie to shoot in theaters without previous short since the original Toy Story in 1995, although this was later paired with the award-winning short film Toy tin on his home video releases.
It sounds like the end of an era that started with The life of an insect in 1998, who started this tradition with the honor Geri's game, the Oscar-winning 5-minute short film telling the charming story of an old man playing chess against himself in the park in a CGI animation that pushes the boundaries. Since then, all Pixar films have followed the tradition of presenting a short film, ranging from hilarious (Partly cloudy, in front of up), Enchanting (Piper, in front of Finding Dory), emotionally devastating (the most recent Oscar winner, Bao who showed in front Indestructible 2). These short films were often a way for aspiring filmmakers to show off their talents or for Pixar to test new technologies, the only exception being patience tests. Olaf'S Frozen Adventure, whose 21-minute laborious resulted in a disastrous attempt to shoot the "short" in front coconut.
But a new era of experimental shorts begins at Pixar, which could explain this break in tradition. The experimental SparkShorts program, designed to develop new creative voices inside and outside Pixar, has proven to be a success – many of his films are even shown in theaters. These short films are all available on YouTube, where most people will watch the Pixar shorts that they missed by buying popcorn.
Toy Story 4 hits the theaters on June 21, 2019.
