Toyota has announced the security recall of some 807,000 Prius and Prius V cars, highlighting the need to solve a problem that could cause vehicles to lose power and block them "in rare cases". The recall concerns Prius cars from the 2010-2014 model years and Prius V cars from the 2012-2014 model years.
"While power steering and braking would remain operational," says Toyota, "a stall of the vehicle while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of an accident."
The reminder is about how vehicles respond if their hybrid systems have problems. They are designed to switch to trouble-free or "smooth" driving if the hybrid system overheats or develops other problems.
"We found that in rare cases, the vehicle could not get into a fail-safe mode of driving as planned," Toyota spokeswoman Tania Saldana said in an email to NPR. "If this happens, the vehicle may lose power and stall."
When asked if any accidents had been reported because of this problem, Toyota did not comment.
According to Automotive News magazine, Toyota's new recall concerns about 2.43 million Prius cars, of which more than one million have been sold in Japan and nearly 300,000 in Europe.
To solve the problem, Toyota will update the software on the vehicles. The company indicates that its resellers will contact the Prius owners concerned when the software becomes available.
