Car manufacturers Subaru and Toyota Motor Corp. recall more than 400,000 vehicles due to a valve spring problem that can stall engines and increase the risk of accidents.
Subaru models, including Forester, Impreza and BRZ, manufactured between January 2012 and September 2013, are included in the recall. Also included are Toyota 86 sports cars manufactured by Subaru, called Scion FR-S in the recall years, according to Newsweek.
The valve springs keep the engine valves closed during the fuel combustion process. Subaru said that valve repairs could take more than 12 hours per vehicle.
On Thursday, Toyota launched an entirely separate reminder on its Scion xA vehicles. The company recalls around 17,000 Scion xA vehicles built between 2004 and 2006 due to a problem related to the airbag and its electrical system. An electrical failure could disable or deploy the air bag system. To avoid any problem or accident related to the airbags, the owners of the recalled vehicles should contact a Toyota dealer, where they can have the air bag replaced for free.
Those expected to be affected by these recalls should begin receiving additional information by mail starting in December.
In October, Toyota had recalled nearly three million Prius hybrid vehicles because of a software problem that could cause a crash. This is one of Toyota's most important all-time recalls, aside from the Takata Corp.'s airbag recalls, which have hit many major manufacturers and millions of vehicles around the world.
