announced Friday it would suspend the production of more than a dozen Japanese assembly plants after an earthquake earlier this week forced it to stop production at a spare parts manufacturing plant north of Japan.

The automaker has announced that it would cease all production for two teams on Monday because it is studying the impact on its supply chain of lost parts production in this plant.

"It will affect all Toyota and Lexus lines in Japan," but not the Daihatsu factories that produce Toyota brand vehicles, the company said.

Toyota's exports from Japan include models such as the popular crossover compact C-HR, the Prius hybrid and the 4Runner SUV, as well as several Lexus models, including the LS sedan and the GX SUV.

The shutdown is due to widespread power outages on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan after the earthquake struck Thursday at local time. More than one million homes in Hokkaido remain without power and the aftershocks are expected to affect the entire Japanese economy.

The loss of power forced Toyota Motor Hokkaido, a subsidiary that manufactures engine parts and transmissions, to suspend operations indefinitely, the company said.

Toyota, which operates 16 plants in Japan, said it "would continue to assess the situation and adapt accordingly."

The Japanese automaker has temporarily shut down its production in Japan after the earthquakes, most recently after the earthquake in 2016 on Kyushu Island in southern Japan.
