A week ago, Clemson coach, Dabo Swinney, said that he would change watch when a player clearly separated on the pitch. That's exactly what happened when Trevor Lawrence appeared dominant on Saturday in a win over Georgia Tech, and the school announced Monday that the first year would be the new rookie of Tigers.
Kelly Bryant, who led Clemson to the college football playoffs last season, started all four games this season, but Lawrence, ESPN's No. 2 global recruiter this year, was excellent, completing 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday.
Swinney refused to discuss the quarterback situation on Sunday, but noted that the victory over Georgia Tech was Lawrence's best game to date.
"He played really well," said Swinney. "He was very fit, the game slowed down for him, he made good decisions, he made some nice shots … and there are just technical things to clean up."
In four games, Bryant led the attack on 21 complete selections, while Lawrence led 23. Clemson averaged 4.2 points per record with Lawrence at the helm, almost double Bryant's success rate .
At Cartersville High School (Ga.), Lawrence was one of the country's most successful rookies and he broke several state records previously held by former Clemson quarterback. Deshaun Watson. Lawrence signed up at Clemson in January, while coaches said he was already ahead of Watson's pace in terms of development. In 2018, Lawrence completed 65% of his throws for 600 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions with a score of 191.8, the eighth highest score in the country. Bryant completed 67% of his passes for 461 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
The Tigers face Syracuse undefeated Saturday.
