Several people were hospitalized after a car was mobilized Tuesday in Flint, Michigan, to protest the minimum wage.

At least eight people were taken to the hospital after a Chevrolet pickup truck crashed against the # FightFor15 protest group, MLive.com reported.

The Democratic government candidate, Gretchen Whitmer, joined those protesting Tuesday for a minimum wage increase for fast food employees, but she was not hurt. She said in a tweet that she was "incredibly sad that so many people were hurt."

Flint Police Chief Tim Johnson said he did not think the injuries were serious and did not think the collision was intentional, according to MLive.com.

"The end of the group was walking down the street when a red truck … it almost acted like he did not see them," Johnson said. "He ran right into them."

Johnson said the driver "looked pretty upset". The driver cooperates with the authorities and is not in custody, reported WEYI-TV.

The accident occurred around 7 am on the Dort expressway. After hitting the group of people, the truck jumped into traffic and was hit by a Consumers Energy vehicle, according to MLive.com.

"This morning, the workers gathered with their union to peacefully protest for a living wage," said Flint Mayor Karen Weaver in a statement to WEYI.

About 1,000 fast-food workers are expected to strike for higher wages and more union rights on Tuesday in Detroit and Flint, the Detroit Free Press reported.
