SINGAPORE – Stock prices in Asia rebounded after a report that President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping could meet at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina in late November.

The Wall Street Journal said the White House had informed officials in Beijing that it would hold a summit in Buenos Aires. He quoted anonymous sources from both sides.

According to the report, the goal was to find a way out of the trade stalemate that led the two countries to impose tariff penalties on billions of dollars of reciprocal exports.

Good Chinese export data also helped to give life to stock indexes that had stagnated in recent days.

Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 0.4%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.7%.
