Trump comes back on claims, he limited the scope of the FBI's Kavanaugh probe

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that the White House has limited the FBI's investigation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

NBC News had previously reported that the White House had instructed the FBI to interview two of the women who had presented allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh, Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez, but not her third accuser – Julie Swetnick . The Wall Street Journal also reported that Swetnick's claims would not be investigated.

"NBC News incorrectly reported (as usual) that I was limiting the FBI's investigation of Judge Kavanaugh and the witnesses to only certain people. In fact, I want them to interview those they deem appropriate, at their discretion. Please correct your report! Tweeted the president.

While traveling to a rally in West Virginia earlier, Trump told reporters that the FBI had "a free reign" in the investigation.

"The FBI, as you know, is everywhere and talking to everyone …" said Trump, CNN reported. "They've already been there, they have every freedom to do what they have to do."

On Friday, the Senate Judiciary Committee asked the White House to order the FBI to conduct further background checks on Kavanaugh. Senator Jeff Flake had previously broken with his party colleagues to request an investigation. The committee asked for a one week inquiry into the claims.

The FBI contacted Ford and Ramirez, but on Saturday, Swetnick's lawyer, Michael Avenatti, tweeted that he had not received any communication from the agency asking him to interview his client. NBC News, citing several sources close to the process, said the White House had ordered the FBI not to question Swetnick.

Ford, who testified before the committee on Thursday, says he was sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh in a high school group in the 1980s, while Ramirez claims that Kavanaugh exposed herself to her when they were undergraduates.

Swetnick claims that Kavanaugh attended a high school party in the 1980s, where she was raped by a gang. She did not claim that he was one of the men who had attacked her, but had claimed that he had incited girls to use drugs and drugs. Alcohol to facilitate attacks.
