Worried by how Justice Brett Kavanaugh solved the problem, Trump hopes to regain control during the first part of the evening in New York. It is only the second time that he is organizing a press conference in US soil as president.
In his hometown for the United Nations Annual General Assembly, Trump embarked on a week of intensive diplomacy poisoned by persistent political chaos in Washington. Six face-to-face meetings and two important speeches were not a great distraction for the president, who spoke out against the Democrats for orchestrating what he considered a "con."
A few hours before Trump had to address reporters, a third accuser came forward to claim that Kavanaugh had behaved inappropriately in high school. Kavanaugh denied all allegations of sexual misconduct.
Behind the scenes, Trump sought to take the reins of the story, disappointed that neither Kavanaugh nor congressional Republicans were able to stop the allegations.
Other stories have also turned. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appeared to be ready to resign on Monday, is expected to meet Thursday at the White House with the President to discuss his future.
And Trump is asking his aides to prepare for his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Sitting earlier at the UN, Trump said the timing and venue of negotiations would be announced in the near future, and that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo should travel to Pyongyang in October to discuss the issue.
