President Trump and the TV show go together like peas and carrots. And these are the names of the perfect turkeys that Trump forgave – on camera – Tuesday afternoon.

The two big toms (Peas weighs 39 pounds and Carrots 41) arrived Sunday in Washington, DC, from South Dakota, where they were bred. After a luxurious but probably confusing two-night stay at the Willard Hotel, they crossed the street to the White House to attend the pardon ceremony.

This is one of the most surreal annual events on the presidential calendar and is a marketing boon for the National Federation of Turkey.

While Trump is delighted to upset some White House traditions, he has inadvertently swallowed it, ignoring the W.C. Fields' wise advice on the dangers of working with animals. (Speaking of wise advice, go easy on your Thanksgiving farce.)

"This turkey is so lucky," said Trump after forgiving Peas. "I have never seen such a beautiful turkey."

The Turkish Federation always brings two birds to forgiveness, just in case it rains too much to be able to participate. Peas beat Carrots to the top of the list at the ceremony in what Trump described as "a fair and open election" on the White House website.

"The carrots refused to concede and asked for a recount," the president joked.

Both birds will be spared by a spot on the Thanksgiving dinner table. They will retire at Gobblers Rest at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
