While many presidents held rallies on behalf of congressional candidates before the midterm elections, these candidates generally focused on the candidates and not on the president. The campaign in which President Trump participates as president Asset Campaign rallies, the candidate usually having a few minutes to make a few comments and Trump spend some time congratulating them and denouncing their opponents.
The rally of Trump, Thursday night in Montana, allowed to check these and all the other boxes expected: inflammatory comments, questionable statements, enthusiastic fans. Trump has organized two dozen campaign rallies as president in 16 states, all but two of which voted for him in 2016. In the past month, he has held three rallies of this type. extend this window in early August and the number climbs to five.
The president also spent much of August at his private golf club in New Jersey. He spent a lot of July there too. This club, Bedminster, is in summer what Mar-a-Lago is in winter: Trump's hideaway, far from the confines of the White House. Shelters, of course, are also close to Trump's golf courses, which the president often uses.
The effect of these hijackings of Washington is remarkable. By our account, Trump has either organized a rally or visited one of his properties on 48 of the last 92 days; that is to say since June 7th.
He has probably played golf at least 30 of these days, about a third, but that's hard to say. When it's in Bedminster, it can be difficult to know when Trump plays golf because the media does not usually have access to the facilities. But as this is his main form of exercise, it can be assumed that he usually plays when he is there.
During his presidency, the numbers are more modest. He visited one of his properties on about 33% of the days and probably played golf on about 22% of the days he was president. (Do you know some of his golf partners? Let us know.) A replica usually offered in response to the regularity with which Trump plays golf is that former President Barack Obama has also played a lot of golf. Obama played 306 rounds as president, over eight years. In less than two years, Trump probably played 129, from our score.
This is what it's been like since Trump took office.
Note that there have been days when Trump visited his own property, played golf and organized a campaign rally. This was facilitated by the fact that Trump only played golf once on a non-Trump property: with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Japan last November.
If you are curious about what properties Trump has visited and when, we have you covered. We have been following this since he took office.
This data will be quickly obsolete. By the time I write, it is Friday; Trump went to play golf or was in one of his properties during each of the last 10 Saturdays. Even though he stays at the White House this weekend, he is expected to participate in two rallies next week in Missouri and Mississippi, two states he also won in 2016.
