Trump: Putin 'probably' involved in assassinations

Lesley Stahl, in CBS's "60 Minutes" show, insisted on the unusually warm relationship with Pump, which he often refuses to criticize publicly.

"Do you agree that Vladimir Putin is involved in assassinations? In poisonings?" Stahl asked Trump.

"Probably, yes," he says. "But I count on them, it's not in our country."

"They should not do it," Stahl replied. "It's a terrible thing."

Trump accepted "of course" that the Russian government should not order assassinations and poisonings.

Putin has been accused of ordering the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, whom he recently called "fool". Although British officials claimed that Russian military officials had carried out the attack on Skripal, the Kremlin denied any involvement.

Many critics or dissidents of the Russian president have been killed in suspicious circumstances.

When Stahl inquired about Russia's interference in the 2016 US presidential election, Trump said that he thought Russia was interfering but that "China was intermingling as well".

Stahl lobbied him for evidence in support of the charge against China, which he was not able to provide.

"You are diverting the whole issue from Russia," said Stahl.

"I'm not doing anything," said the president.

Critics and allies have criticized Trump during the joint press conference with Putin in Helsinki this summer, during which Trump seemed to cast doubt on Russia's involvement in the hacking of the 2016 elections. US intelligence agencies unanimously concluded that Russia was seeking to influence the results of the presidential election in favor of Trump.

Trump and Putin met alone before the press conference. During the interview "60 Minutes", he stated that he was "hard" with the Russian leader at this meeting.
