President Donald Trump summoned Game of thrones Friday on Twitter to promote his government's announcement on the reimposition of sanctions on Iran.

Appearing to be inspired by the golden letters of the HBO series, the ominous gray sky and the signature slogan ("Winter is coming"), Trump asked Twitter to say "Sanctions Are Coming", referring to an earlier announcement of the Trump administration that it would reimpose any US sanctions on Iran that had been lifted as part of the 2015 nuclear deal since Barack Obama's presidency.

HBO responded quickly in a statement issued on Weekly entertainment, saying: "We were not aware of this message and would prefer that our brand not be diverted for political purposes."

Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the series, was quick to comment, tweeting "Not today". Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in Game of thrones, commented on a simple "Ew."

The creators and several cast members of the series have shared their feelings about the president in the past.

"I think Joffrey is now the king of the United States," said George R.R. Martin, who created the books on which the series is based. Weekly entertainment in 2017. "And he grew as petulant and irrational as when he was 13 years old in books."

Kit Harrington, who plays the role of Jon Snow, once called the president a "fraudster".

The President's tweet follows his speech to the United Nations in September, when he called on world leaders to cut back on Iranian oil purchases. Friday's announcement also marks the second round of sanctions that the United States has reinstated since Trump announced in May that the US would pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, which was often the subject criticisms from Trump before and during his presidency. The sanctions will affect Iran's finance, shipping and energy sectors, as well as, with a few exceptions, third countries importing Iranian oil or doing business with Iranian financial institutions.

For critics of Trump, the critical reactions were quick.
