Rudy Giuliani said President Donald Trump would not answer any questions, in person or in writing, about Special Adviser Robert Mueller's investigation into a possible obstruction of justice, the Associated Press reported on Thursday night.

"It's a no-go. It will not happen. There will be no questions about the obstruction.

Giuliani's remarks, Trump's personal attorney, are the most categorical rejection of any of Mueller's potential interrogations in his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections, and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Mueller would like to ask Trump if his dismissal of former FBI director James Comey and his critical comments against Attorney General Jeff Sessions were intended to undermine the investigation.

Trump's lawyers and Mueller investigators negotiated terms for a possible interview with the president for months. In July, Trump's legal team said it was open to Trump's response to questions about collusion with Russia, but not about the obstruction. There had been speculation that they could be open to Trump answering questions of obstruction, but only in written form.

Trump said he was eager to talk to the investigators, but Trump's lawyers fear that obstruction issues will become a "trap of perjury" that could lead the president to deportation if he does not tell the truth.

Last month, Giuliani said Trump would not stay for an interview after Sept. 1, a deadline that has passed.

Mueller could also summon Trump to testify, which would set up an epic legal confrontation likely headed to the US Supreme Court.
