ROSEAU, Dominica – Tropical Storm Kirk brought down heavy rains and sparked floods as she crossed the eastern Caribbean on Thursday.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominica, Martinique and Guadeloupe. A tropical storm watch has been issued for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The authorities of the French island of Guadeloupe closed the schools on Thursday and Friday as a preventive measure.

The US National Hurricane Center has stated that rainfall of up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) could fall in parts of Dominica and Martinique. Forecasters have stated that mudslides and flash floods are possible.

The storm had a maximum wind speed of 85 km / h and was located about 140 km east-southeast of Martinique. It was moving from west to northwest at 14 mph (22 km / h).

Meanwhile, forecasters predict that Hurricane Rosa will reach Category 3 strength off the Pacific coast of Mexico, but it is not expected to threaten land until next week.

Rosa had sustained maximum winds of 105 km / h (165 km / h) and was located approximately 530 miles (855 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Forecasters have said it is likely to strengthen further at sea, but then weaken to become a tropical storm force by returning to the peninsula early next week.
