Twitter has removed thousands of automated accounts that have tried to dissuade users from voting in the upcoming mid-term elections, the company confirmed Friday. The accounts go back to the United States and have been found to be wicker than an organized plot.

"We removed a series of accounts for attempting to share misinformation in an automated way – a violation of our policies," said a spokesman for Twitter. "We stopped this quickly and at the source."

The Democratic Congress Campaign Committee (DCCC) has reported malicious accounts to Twitter officials, reports Reuters. Among the tweets, many said that male Democrats should refrain from voting to avoid drowning women's voices, sources told the news agency.

"For this year's elections, we have established open lines of communication and direct and easy escalation routes for the state election officials, the DHS and the campaign organizations of the two main parties. ", said Twitter spokesman.

Earlier this year, Twitter reportedly suspended 70 million fake and suspicious accounts and identified 3,814 accounts that would be propaganda on the part of the Russian-based Internet Research Agency.

The accounts were stopped in late September and early October, reports Reuters.
