Columbia, SC (WLTX) Two dead birds found within the city of Columbia have been tested positive for West Nile disease.
The city will spray adult mosquitoes that begin Wednesday, September 19 and end on Thursday, September 20.
Spraying is usually done around midnight and at dawn.
Residents allergic to permethrin or tau-fluvalinate products are advised to notify vector control personnel by calling the Columbia City Code at 803-545-4229. All beekeepers must also call the code application to inform the staff of their hives.
Residents are encouraged to take these preventive measures to reduce the threat of mosquitoes:
- Use, in accordance with label instructions, EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or lemon eucalyptus oil.
- Drainage of debris and weed ditches
- Stack the holes with sand
- Clean blocked gutters
- Keep boats spilled, drained or covered (covers must not collect water)
- Ornamental ponds and water gardens with minnows that feed
- Properly maintain pools
- Change the water in pet dishes, bird baths and containers used to root plants at least once a week
- Make sure there are screens on the rain barrels and use the water as soon as possible.
