Two police officers were shot dead Wednesday night while serving a search warrant in an apartment complex in Maryland.

The two policemen were airlifted to a nearby trauma center, but they sustained life-threatening injuries, the Baltimore Sun reported.

A unit of nine police officers from Prince George County was executing a search warrant at a compound located about 30 miles southeast of Annapolis, a county police spokeswoman said at a news conference.

When no one answered the door, police made a forced entry and a suspect armed with a shotgun immediately fired at him, the spokeswoman said.

A policeman fought back, but the suspect was not hit.

One policeman was hit in one arm and another was hit near the shoulder. A tactical nurse in the unit applied "life-saving medical assistance" to the police, the spokeswoman said.

The suspect was in detention after returning to the authorities, police said. Another person in the apartment was not involved and was considered a witness.
