Two people were killed when a small plane crashed on Saturday morning in a forested part of a residential Woburn neighborhood, officials said.
Kathleen Bergen, an FAA spokeswoman, said the Columbia Aircraft LC41 sank 4 miles from Hanscom Field in Bedford around 11 am.
The plane crashed into the woods near Henderson Road and Minchin Drive, said Woburn Mayor Scott Galvin.
No other information on the victims was available immediately.
The origin of the plane was not immediately understood, but it was not at Hanscom Field Airport in Bedford, said Massport spokeswoman Jennifer Mehigan.
State police said they sent crews to the scene. The FAA is also sending authorities to investigate, Bergen said.
"The National Transportation Safety Council will determine the probable cause of the accident," Bergen said in an email.
Eileen Jones, 30, who lives on Henderson Road with her brother and parents, said that "the whole house was shaking" when the plane crashed. His immediate fear was that his gas lines had broken.
"I have never felt a single movement like this," Jones said.
Jones said she heard two loud explosions about a minute apart and called 911. She ran outside and saw smoke settling over the trees behind their street. A "terrible stench" permeated the air.
The plane crashed into the back yard of a nearby house, knocking down one of the trees, Jones said. The police recorded access and temporarily blocked the streets adjacent to non – emergency vehicles.
Julianne and Marc Almeida said that they were lying in their house on Minchin Drive when they heard an accident and that plumes of smoke had appeared in the air.
"We heard the plane arrive and it seemed that it was going to come up close and fast," said Julianne.
She ran through several neighboring houses before falling on the ruins of the plane and calling 911.
"I went to the accident site, and I was screaming to see if anyone could hear, but I did not think anyone would," she said from the front steps. from his house, near the scene of the accident.
Julianne and Marc said that the accident had left debris all around, but that all the houses seemed to have some tact.
"Quite madly since the plane is so close, there does not seem to be any damage to the houses," Marc said.
