Two warehouse employees died Friday after a storm caused the partial collapse of a building in an Amazonian facility in the Baltimore area, reported the Baltimore Sun.
Officials told the Sun that they did not want to identify the victims yet and said it was unclear whether they were employed by Amazon or its trucking subcontractor.
Baltimore Fire Chief Roman Clark said a 20-foot-high wall had collapsed at the Amazon Fulfillment Center in the midst of a massive storm, crushing two men. One of the victims was found Friday night and the other early Saturday morning.
Dave Clark, senior vice president of global operations for Amazon, said in a statement Saturday that first responders were on hand to assess the damage caused by the warehouse in the warehouse, which was closed for the time being.
"The safety of our employees and our contractors is our top priority and, for the time being, the building remains closed," Clark said. "We are extremely grateful for the quick response of the emergency services."
Clark, who oversees the transportation and fulfillment of the company's orders, had tweeted Saturday earlier to confirm the news and thank the stakeholders.
Amazon is under fire from critics for the lack of regulation and poor working conditions in its warehouses around the world. The accident comes nearly a year after Amazon was ordered to pay a $ 28,000 fine for breach of security, two months after the death of two warehouse employees in separate incidents at separate facilities.
