Monday morning, the storm was still strengthening in the western Pacific, near the Philippines, and had to reach a size of super-typhoon before the end of the day.
It is expected to hit Taiwan on Friday or Saturday at a level equivalent to a category 4 or 5 hurricane with winds of up to 270 kilometers at the hour (168 mph).
"Trami is getting stronger right now and seems like a super typhoon in the next 12 hours," said CNN meteorologist Michael Guy. "The storm should continue to move to the west-northwest and turn north – the moment of turn is still uncertain because there are only a few days left."
Current predictions suggest that the typhoon will affect northern and central Taiwan, as well as the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, although Guy said the storm could weaken in the Pacific and interact with some of the southern Taiwanese land.
