Uber opened the Toronto Advanced Technologies Group's office last May. It is led by Raquel Urtasun, a local AI researcher, professor at the University of Toronto, and Canada Research Chair in Machine Learning and Computer Vision.
The company initially suspended all its efforts to obtain autonomous cars on the road following the fatal accident and decided not to renew its driver's license for self-driving in California. His vehicles returned to public roads, but in manual mode.
Uber has been testing autonomous cars in Toronto since last year and said the company remains "very committed" to strengthening its AV research in the region.
