Uber has transformed the global taxi industry – and now he is looking at other professions.
According to an article in the Financial Times on Thursday, citing "people familiar with the subject," the California transport giant is creating a new business unit that would allow job seekers to access jobs. short-term roles such as "servers and security guards."
The effort, called Uber Works, would represent a significant expansion of the services offered by Uber. This is a company that is preparing to go public on a highly anticipated IPO in 2019.
The news is also likely to provoke new criticisms of Uber from union activists. The company has long been attacked by critics for what they say was a working model operator for its drivers without the benefits of a traditional job. Uber, which is moving into new sectors, will raise new fears about the impact of the company on workers' rights.
For its part, Uber argued that its model – where self-employed workers decide when they want to work through an app – gives workers more flexibility and that they have spoken favorably about the setup in the surveys.
According to the FT report, Uber has tested Uber Works in Los Angeles and is under development in Chicago. It is unclear what types of roles are considered appropriate for the model beyond the two cited in the report – servers and security officers.
