LONE TREE, Colo. (CBS4) – If you and your family members still need to get the flu shot, you can get it for free Saturday, even if you do not have health insurance.
UCHealth is organizing a free flu vaccination event at Park Meadows Mall in Lone Tree from 11am to 1pm. It will be located on the first level next to Eco Mountain.
Anyone between the ages of 3 and 65 is welcome to get the flu shot.
Doctors are urging people to get the flu shot as soon as possible to get vaccinated before the peak of the influenza season.
"It takes about two weeks for the flu shot to get your body to produce antibodies," Dr. Johnny Shen told CBS4.
The flu season is here but it's not too late to get the flu shot
According to the Centers for Disease Control website, influenza activity often starts to increase in October. Most of the time, influenza activity peaks between December and February.
The CDC reported a drop in the number of people getting the flu shot last season. The CDC also reported that 180 children had died of the flu in the country last year and that 80% of these children were not vaccinated.
Dr. Shen said that children are more likely to catch it because their immune system is not as developed as that of adults.
He added that pregnant women can be vaccinated against influenza without harming their unborn baby. Even people with egg allergy can get vaccinated, but they should first consult their doctor.
Shen said washing hands, coughing in his arm and disinfecting surfaces were always the best ways to fight the flu.
