UConn's new coach, Dan Hurley, recently out of the No. 15 Syracuse match at the classic 2K Empire at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, was eliminated from Friday's match against Iowa after a second technical.
The UConn fans in the garden did not seem to care about it. They cheered and chanted his name before leaving the court.
Hurley was in the locker room for the last minute, 44 seconds after the Huskies' 91-72 loss to Iowa during the tournament's championship game. After the match, Hurley said it was the first time that he had been tossed since the high school team's training at St. Benedict in Newark, New Jersey.
Hurley, brought by UConn in March, led the Huskies (3-1) to their first victory against a ranked away team since 2014 on Thursday. It brought an intensity and intensity that was lacking to the team in the last two years.
"I thought Connecticut had played harder than us," said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim after the game.
Asked about the amount of energy the team provided by the coach, Connecticut Guard Jalen Adams said, "pretty much everything."
"It's a perfect match, its personality connects perfectly with many of our personalities."
But on Friday, the Huskies were overtaken by Iowa (4-0). They had no answer for the big front line of the Hawkeyes.
Luka Garza had 18 points, including two to three points and four first-half rebounds for Iowa. She finished with 22 points and seven rebounds. Tyler Cook had 26 points and eight rebounds.
Hurley said UConn is still developing as a team.
"This is not a Disney movie," said Hurley. "It's not the Mighty Ducks or anything, it will take time."
