But this fight is about so much more than that and this event features so much more than just the main event, although it is understandably garnering the lion’s share of the attention as Fight Week commences and the public shifts its gaze towards the desert.
It has been nearly two years since McGregor last competed in a mixed martial arts bout and in those intervening 23 months, “The Notorious” one’s popularity and profile has exploded. His bout with Floyd Mayweather turned him into a true global superstar and set him up with enough money to take care of several generations of McGregors going forward, yet here he is – just a few short days away from taking on an undefeated wrecking machine who has finally admitted that this contest is about more than just defending his lightweight title; this bout is personal.
While McGregor is flamboyant and loud – the first to tell you about how great he is and always angling to get the last word in – Nurmagomedov is his opposite, careful with his words and happy to let his performance in the cage speak for him most of the time. Pegged as a potential champion early in his ascent, the unbeaten Dagestani standout was seemed snake-bitten for a time – unable to stay healthy and at risk of watching the division pass him by.
Over the last nine months, however, Nurmagomedov has remained healthy and posted convincing wins over Edson Barboza and Al Iaquinta, further solidifying his place atop the division and drawing McGregor back into the Octagon for one of the most anticipated fights in UFC history.
And then there are the 12 fights that will come before it on Saturday night.
