KAMPALA, Uganda – Ugandan lawmakers who became opponents of the pop-star are returning home Thursday after seeking treatment in the United States for injuries sustained as a result of alleged torture by the state.

Bobi Wine, whose real name Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, is accused of treason for his alleged role in an incident in August in which the procession of President Yoweri Museveni was bombarded with stones.

Ssentamu is on bail. His lawyers call the accusation of false betrayal.

Ugandan authorities said the police would escort her from the airport to her home to maintain order. Police said that "illegal gatherings, processions and gatherings" would not be allowed.

In a series of messages on Twitter, Ssentamu replied, "I am a free Ugandan with the right to move freely in my country. The police do not have to tell me who is receiving me and who can not or where I am going and where I can not.

The alleged torture of Ssentamu and his co-defendants was widely condemned at home and abroad. The Ugandan authorities deny the allegations.

Ssentamu says that he is fighting to be released from oppression and wants Museveni, in power since 1986, to retire.
