A prominent Ukrainian anti-corruption activist died three months after being injured during an acid attack.

Kateryna Handzyuk, 33, was burned to more than 40% of the body and suffered serious eye injuries as a result of the July 31 aggression in Kherson, in the south of the country.

Ms. Handzyuk, who was also a member of the Kherson City Council, had 11 operations in the capital Kyiv.

President Petro Poroshenko on Sunday called for the punishment of murderers. Five suspects are already in detention.

  • Can Ukraine resist the "war on corruption"?

The cause of Ms. Handzyuk's death was not known in the immediate future, but local media hinted that it was a blood clot.

In September, the activist – who also campaigned against Russian-backed separatism – published a video in which she urged Ukrainians to fight endemic corruption.

"I know I look bad now, but at least I am treated," she said. "And I really know that I look much better than justice in Ukraine because nobody treats her."

The death of activist Sunday triggered an avalanche of reactions on social networks in Ukraine, causing shock to many users.
