President Donald Trump may have hoped that his Tuesday speech at the United Nations will remain etched in memory for his eloquence, or at least for his effectiveness. Given that he was greeted with laughter – "laughs at you, not with you" – in his early moments, those goals were not met, if Trump had indeed.
"Today, I am appearing before the United Nations General Assembly to share the tremendous progress we have made, and in less than two years my administration has accomplished more than almost every administration in the world. history of our country, "said Trump according to CNN.
Much of the room clearly did not share this feeling, based on the audible laughter that met his comment.
"So true, I did not expect that reaction, but it's okay," Trump mused in response to the laughter, causing an even louder laughter.
While Trump was addressing the United Nations, he was facing an increasingly uncertain crowd about the president and his right-wing nationalist agenda. Trump's foreign policy, "America First" – they share the same name as the popular isolationist movement among supporters of the American right wing before World War II – ruled America out of the Paris agreement on the climate; to oppose free trade agreements with North America, Europe and Asia; and flee the multilateral alliances that promote democracy, such as NATO, for dictators like Vladimir Putin (Russia) and Kim Jong Un (North Korea).
Trump defended his policies by touting them as being in the best interests of Americans. "The United States is a stronger, safer and richer country than when I took office less than two years ago," said Trump. "We defend America and the American people and we also defend the world".
The president also touched on the issue of trade policy – an issue that has caused considerable concern in the international community because of the trade tensions Trump has with countries like China and Mexico.

"We believe that trade must be fair and reciprocal," Trump told the United Nations. "We will not allow our workers to be victims, our businesses to be deceived and our wealth sacked and transferred."
The president also justified his administration's decision to remove America from the Iranian nuclear deal. "Iran's leaders are wreaking havoc, death and destruction," Trump told delegates. "They respect neither their neighbors nor their borders nor the sovereign rights of the nations".
He also urged the nations assembled to follow the US initiative by imposing sanctions on the Iranian government. "The United States has launched a campaign of economic pressure to deny the regime the funds it needs to advance its bloody agenda," Trump told the United Nations.
