Eric Dungey, the quarterback of Syracuse in North Carolina, understood.
The defensive line blitzes often in the second half and forces him to throw wandering. Then they fired him.
On seven consecutive possessions, Syracuse played 28 pieces and won 54 yards. And the Tar Heels led 27-20.
Syracuse coach Dino Babers made an unexpected decision. He turned to his alternate quarterback Tommy DeVito, who had 34 assists and one touchdown all season.

The rookie added two more touchdown passes to help Orange win a 40-37 double overtime win over the Tar Heels. UNC will play in Virginia next week.
Here are five observations of Saturday's match:
1. UNC appeared caught off guard by QB rookie
All week long, UNC coach Larry Fedora, praised Dungey and the way his game motivates his team. Fedora said that if Dungey ran, he would try to punish the defender. The Tar Heels are well prepared for him. They closed it in the second half.
But they did not seem prepared for DeVito, which Babers put late in the fourth quarter. When he entered the game, Devito was 17-34 for 218 yards and one touchdown in four games.
"I thought it might be a spark," said Babers.
DeVito tied the game at the end of the fourth quarter with a 42-yard touchdown pass. And during extra time, he made two more touchdowns. He finished the game 11-19 for 181 yards and three touchdowns. He also had an interception.
"The guy had a career day, started the ball very well," Fedora said. "He made very good shots. Place the ball where it should be. So you have to give him credit. "
Fedora said the Syracuse game plan had not really changed. They just pitched the ball more than they would have had if Dungey had been in.
2. More missed opportunities
The Tar Heels have had several chances to end the game and even win after losing the lead.
Senior kicker Freeman Jones missed a 45-yard goal with a time remaining at 5:16, which would have allowed the Tar Heels to earn 10 points.
A few minutes later, UNC clocked a third-and-fourth-half pass from Anthony Ratliff Williams to striker Carl Tucker from Wildcat. There remained 2:17 in the match. The pass was a bit low, but Tucker, who was wide open, grabbed the ball and let go.
A catch would probably have also ended the game. Syracuse had exhausted all its waiting periods, except one.
After Syracuse equalized the match and recovered the ball to win it, junior cornerback Patrice René got an interception at Syracuse 38 with 52 seconds to go. A few meters would have placed the UNC in goalkeeper position to win it. But UNC played five consecutive games without winning a goal.
It was similar to the missed opportunities that UNC had against Virginia Tech. UNC missed the goal line with just over six minutes to play against the Hokies. The touchdown would also have allowed UNC to score two goals.
3. Elliott had probably his best match
After being elected last week in favor of quarterback Cade Fortin, Elliott returned to play one of his best games of the season. He was 20-25 in the first period for 160 yards and one touchdown.
In the second half, he was 12-23 for 157 yards. He made big shots in the first half during the third try. And that was when the UNC run averaged less than two yards per race. Elliott's game seemed to give confidence to the rest of the team.
And finally, the passing game opened the race.
Elliott's best statistic was his nil turnover. Still the loss hurts.
"It was heartbreaking," Elliott said. "I think we had several chances to seal the match. We must be better in these situations. "
With Fortin absent and a lack of options at quarterback, it looks like Elliott will start for the rest of the season. If UNC took up football, the offensive showed that she could score points.
4. The defense has the pressure without Carney
It had not been easy to put pressure on the quarterback without defensive end Malik Carney. But on Saturday, as Carney took part in his last suspension match, UNC has always put the pressure on. UNC recorded five sacks on Saturday and forced Dungey to make bad passes.
This is a good sign for the defense, who will get their best pass for the rest of the season. This is unless UNC does a 12th part program. Carney has 5.5 bags in three games played.

5. Patrice René went out recently

Rene also had a big interception against Virginia Tech. He fought against East Carolina, but has recently strengthened. What hurt UNC is the loss of junior cornerback K.J. The sails on the other side.
Sails missed the last two games because of an undisclosed injury. He had played well so far. If UNC retrieved it in any way, with René's play, the secondary game would be even better.
