UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) – The UN General Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution authorizing Palestine to further participate in its work as the president of the largest bloc under development at the United Nations.
At a plenary meeting of the body composed of 193 members, the United States, Israel and Australia voted against the text titled President of the Group of 77 for 2019, 15 members s 39 being abstained and 146 crushing members voting for.
The text entrusted six new roles to Palestine by presiding the G77 at the assembly, including making statements, submitting and co-sponsoring proposals and amendments, and raising procedural motions on behalf of the G77 and from China.
On September 27, Palestine was officially elected as president of the G77, whose presidency lasts one year from January 1, 2019.
The Egyptian Envoy, current Chair and Resolution Resolution Holder, stated at the introduction of the text that, as Palestine remains an observer State not a member of the United Nations, its rights and privileges vary. according to the organs of the UN.
In this context, a resolution would be needed to assert Palestine's rights and ability to "perform the usual functions and practices of the G77 President at the General Assembly," said the Egyptian Permanent Representative to the United Nations. from the UN, Mohamed Fathi Ahmed Edrees.
Before the vote on the document, the United States and Israel voted against it.
"We strongly oppose the Palestinian G77 presidential elections, as well as this so-called enabling resolution," said Jonathan Cohen, United Nations Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations. "Only UN Member States should have the right to speak and act on behalf of major groups of states at the United Nations."
After the adoption of the resolution, most Western countries that voted for the text said their decision should not be misinterpreted as recognition of the state of Palestine or a statement on its status at the United Nations.
They also welcomed the limitation of one year, from the duration of the G77 presidency, to the expanded role played by Palestine in its new functions.
