The Irish Aviation Authority is investigating reports of "unusual air activity" after several reports of unidentified flying objects.
On Friday, a pilot said he saw bright lights near the British Airways plane, according to which he was flying from Montreal to London, according to an exchange recording on the Airlive Flying Web site. The pilot radioed air traffic control in Shannon, Ireland, to first request military exercises in the area.
Air traffic control responded by saying there were no military exercises in the Boeing 787 sector.
"He arrived on our left and quickly turned north," said the pilot, adding that the object was "lit" and then disappeared. The pilot told air traffic control that she did not think the object would collide with her plane but wanted to know what she had seen. She described the object as moving "so fast".
One person responded saying that it could be a "meteor or other object making a kind of comeback".
In a statement to NBC News, the IAA said it was investigating this information.
"Following reports of unusual aerial activity reported by a small number of aircraft on Friday, November 9, the IAA has filed a report which will be the subject of an investigation into the part of the normal process of investigating a confidential event, "the statement said.
On the recording, a second driver also said to have seen the object. The pilot, on a Virgin Airlines flight from Orlando, Florida to Manchester, England, said he also saw the lights.
"At 11 o'clock, two bright lights seemed to swing to the right and then fly away," added another pilot.
