A United Atlas Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket is in final preparation for the launch of the fourth High Frequency Communications Satellite (AEHF) for the US Air Force. The launch is scheduled for October 17 at Space Launch Complex-41 from Cape Canaveral Air Base.

Producing more than two and a half million pounds of take-off thrust, the Atlas V 551 configuration rocket is the most powerful of the Atlas V fleet. The 551 rocket has launched innovative missions for our country – a very important constellation of systems. from Mobile User Goals (MUOS) to historical science missions, including New Horizons, the first mission to Pluto and the Juno mission to Jupiter. The configuration of the atlas V 551 was launched on January 19, 2006 and has been launched eight times to date.

The AEHF system, developed by Lockheed Martin, provides comprehensive, protected and survivable communication capabilities, significantly improved for strategic command and tactical combatants.

This mission will be launched aboard an Atlas V 551 configuration vehicle, which includes a fairing of 5 meters wide and a height of 197 feet. The Atlas recall for this mission is powered by the RD AMROSS RD-180 engine. Aerojet Rocketdyne supplied the five solid rocket boosters SRB (AJR-60A) and the engine RL10C-1 for the upper stage of the Centauri.

To date, ULA has achieved 100% success on mission with 130 successful launches.
